PUF Timeline 1876-1891

1876:

Classes began at Texas A&M October 4, 1876, with an enrollment of 6 students. Thomas S. Gathright served as first president. By the time the first year ended there were 106 students enrolled.

The Constitution of 1876 established a “Permanent University Fund" and called for the creation of The University of Texas, which had yet to be organized, and mandated that the A&M College of Texas was to be a branch of The University of Texas. The Constitution took away the prime lands bordering the railroads (one section for every ten) and granted in its place 1,000,000 acres in West Texas.

1883:

On April 10, 1883 the Legislature added 1,000,000 acres of land in West Texas to the PUF which was land turned back over to the State from the Texas and Pacific Railroad because it was considered too worthless to survey. Classes began at The University of Texas in the Temporary Capitol at 11th and Congress on September 15, 1883, with an enrollment of 221 students and 13 faculty members. Classes moved to west wing of “old Main” in 1884.

1891:

Established in 1891, the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) is dedicated to its threefold mission of scholarly teaching, innovative scientific research and state-of-the-art patient care.

UTMB has grown from one building, 23 students and 13 faculty members to a modern health
science center with 73 major buildings, more than 2,800 students and more than 1,600 faculty. The 86-acre campus includes seven hospitals and an affiliated Shriners Burns Institute, more than 100 outpatient clinics, two institutes, four schools, a major medical library, and numerous research facilities.
